A license for Starlink to provide high-speed service has been granted by the Government. The satellite Internet network is operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
The approval follows months of negotiations and a direct discussion in June between President Joseph Aoun and Mr Musk, who voiced interest in entering Lebanon’s market.
A minimum monthly charge of $100 will be billed to customers.
Starlink is being positioned as a backup plan in case of a breakdown in current Internet services, especially in case of war or an Israeli attack. It is not supposed to replace current Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
Starlink is already active in several Gulf states, including Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and Jordan, and is awaiting final regulatory clearance in the UAE. The network operates more than 8,000 low-Earth orbit satellites at an altitude of about 550 kilometers.
The government hopes Starlink’s arrival will stabilize access, reduce disruptions and position the country more competitively in the regional digital economy.
