The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the Arabic Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO) organized, on September 28, a conference on ‘The Role of Green Industries in Promoting Socio-Economic Development in the Arab Countries’.

The three-day conference, held in Beirut, is part of ESCWA’s efforts to help develop a common Arab understanding of how the green economy can support sustainable development. It aims to encourage Arab states to adopt the concept of green industries, and to develop a common understanding of the outcomes of ‘Rio+20’ Earth Summit, which will be held in 2012 in Brazil.

The conference is held in cooperation with the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the German Agency for International Cooperation, and the Arab League.

The conference addresses the concept of Green Industries and the requirements to promote this concept in the Arab countries. It portrays the economic, social, and environmental benefits resulting from the adoption of Green Industry policies. It also addresses the importance of the role of financial institutions in supporting investments in Green Industries in the region.

A field technical visit to local factories active in the area of green industries will be organized on September 30, the last day of the conference.
