The Ministry of Economy and Trade has lifted a partial ban on imports from Japan. The Ministry had earlier tightened the set of preconditions from importing goods from Japan, in the aftermath of the nuclear radiation leak following a massive earthquake in March 2011.

The new decision allows the import of all kinds of goods from Japan. However, it stipulates that the goods must be tested for radiations in laboratories located at the borders. If any radiation activity is spotted, the goods must be tested by the Atomic Energy Commission - of the National Council for Scientific Research – to check whether or not the radiances exceed the upper limit allowed in the country.

The value of our imports from Japan totaled $662 million in 2010, according to the Customs figures. Vehicles and transport equipment topped the imports list, accounting for 76 percent of the total imports value. Electrical instruments constituted ten percent of the total imports, while Plastics accounted for around five percent.
