Business leaders met on November 15, to formulate a unified stance on the proposal made by Minister of Labor Charbel Nahas to correct the wages of employees.

The private sector representatives voiced relief over the Minister’s proposal to increase all wages by 16 percent without setting any ceiling for the increases.

The president of the private sector economic bodies, former Minister Adnan Kassar, said that the proposal “matches the outlook the private sector has conveyed since the start of deliberations with the GCLU in the Price Index Committee.”

“This proportion of 16 percent reflects the actual inflation rate since 2008, as determined by the Central Administration of Statistics (CAS),” he said.

The president of the General Confederation of Labor Unions (GCLU) Ghassan Ghosn, called the Minister of Labor to commit to the recommendations of the Shura council, in terms of having the wage increase decision applied to all wages (without setting a ceiling).

Ghosn also insisted on having an addition of LL2,000 per each work day to the transportation fees, thus bringing the total to LL10,000 per day.

The GCLU also reiterated its demand to increase education allowances for each student from LL500,000 to LL750,000, with a maximum of LL1.5 million for each family.
