Middle East Airlines (MEA) is preparing to launch of ‘Fly Beirut’, a low-cost carrier scheduled to take off in 2027. Positioned as a no-frills, budget-friendly airline, it is designed to make travel to and from Lebanon more affordable. After years of economic strain, high travel costs, and fluctuating tourism flows, MEA aims to broaden access to Lebanon, targeting cost-conscious travelers from the Gulf, Europe, Eastern Europe, and parts of Asia. “Lebanon remains a captivating Mediterranean destination, but accessibility has been a barrier,” said MEA Chairman Mohamed El Hout. “Fly Beirut is meant to change that.”
Modern and fuel-efficient fleet
Fly Beirut will launch with a fleet of ‘Airbus A321neo’ aircraft, known for their fuel efficiency and low operating costs which are key factors in sustaining competitive fares. The aircraft will service short- and medium-haul routes initially, with MEA considering possible longer-haul operations as the airline expands. Passengers can expect a streamlined service offering, but MEA says comfort won’t be compromised. The A321neo’s cabin layout will prioritize efficiency while offering competitive comfort compared with regional low-cost rivals.
Expanding regional and European connectivity
In its first phase, Fly Beirut is expected to operate daily or near-daily routes to key regional and European cities. Early targets include Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Doha, Paris, and London, along with additional destinations in Eastern Europe and Asia where demand for affordable Middle East travel is on the rise. The new carrier will complement MEA’s existing premium network, allowing Lebanon’s flag carrier to compete across both ends of the market—high-end and budget travel.
Timely boost for tourism and hospitality
Fly Beirut will stimulate demand by lowering the cost of access for families, youth travelers, and communities in the Diaspora. Affordable travel packages and group-friendly fares are expected to play a central role in Fly Beirut’s offering, providing a boost to Lebanon’s hotels, resorts, restaurants, and tour operators. The airline’s launch aligns with a growing appetite for travel following years of constraints, both in Lebanon and globally. MEA’s decision is partly driven by rising competition from regional low-cost carriers and shifting traveler expectations.
Strategic shift at MEA
The creation of Fly Beirut marks a significant evolution for MEA, long known for its full-service model. While the legacy carrier continues to cultivate its premium clientele, it acknowledges that changing global travel dynamics, and Lebanon’s economic reality, necessitate a diversified approach. With regional low-cost carriers gaining ground, MEA is positioning itself to retain market share while opening new avenues for growth. “Fly Beirut is a defensive and offensive strategy at once,” said an official at MEA.
