Lebanon’s Internet capacity will be raised to 33 Gbps (gigabits per second) within a few weeks, Minister of Telecommunications Nicolas Sehnaoui said on Tuesday (March 27). He said that the plan involves adding 10 Gbps to the country’s current bandwidth.

Sehnaoui said that within the last ten months the capacity was raised from 3 Gbps to 23 Gbps.

The minister also said that he submitted to the Cabinet a draft requesting the amendment of a decree governing the DSL tariffs. The amendment allows DSL subscribers to Ogero unlimited night-time usage. Sehnaoui said that 122,000 DSL subscribers to Ogero will benefit from unlimited DSL traffic usage between 12 midnight and 7 a.m.

Sehnaoui said that he had also suggested cutting down the tariff for extra internet consumption.

Sehnaoui said that the Cabinet is due to discuss a draft for linking Lebanon with Cyprus through a new international cable. If connected, this cable would allow Lebanon an additional 700 Gbps of capacity.
