The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) signed a national policy for seeds and seedlings on Monday (November 19), under a cooperation agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The policy involves a plan to promote the cultivation of seeds and ensure production efficiency and quality control.

The policy will boost seed production for local use and for exporting. The local market relies entirely on imports to satisfy its needs in terms of seeds for plantation. According to the MoA, the project is expected to raise local annual production of wheat seeds to 5,000 tons. A plan to produce vegetable seeds was also put in place.
A national council for seeds and seedlings will soon be established to monitor the sector, along with a technical committee. The project has an allocated budget of $250,000.
