Saccal Enterprises, a general contractor and member of Saccal Group, was awarded the main contract works at the Lebanese American University (LAU), Beirut campus. The works include electricity infrastructure works and the construction of a data center. The size of the deal is around $10 million, said Wassim Chehayeb, Managing Director at Saccal Enterprises. “Out of four top local construction firms that applied for the project, we were the only ones awarded the tender,” he said.

The project comprises two parts. The first, which will see the renovation of the LAU’s power infrastructure, includes building main stations, substations, and medium voltage loops interconnecting them. A 5MVA power plant, expandable to 8MVA, will be built on a plot of 1,600 square meters. The distribution infrastructure will be renovated, starting from the power plant and ending inside all campus buildings.

Works will comprise exterior aspect improvements, like landscaping, paving, ramp, fencing, gates, concrete works, and land leveling.

A new medium voltage infrastructure will be installed inside the campus, including transformers, switchgears, a 750 m long medium voltage loop, and more than 12,000 m of low voltage cables.

The second part of the project involves building a data center in the LAU’s basement. The data center will include all the university's records and information.

Chehayeb said: “Subcontractors could be appointed to carry out some of the works.” The whole project will be executed within 18 months.
