The Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) will regulate imports and sales of telecom equipment starting October 12, 2013. It will be responsible for issuing essential certificates and authorization to importers.

Previously, the Ministry of Telecommunication was in charge of regulating this activity. “We used to give telecom importers pre-approval licenses without going into the details of signing customs documents,” said Imad Hobballah, Acting Chairman of the TRA.

The TRA has announced it will implement a new system to approve telecom machinery imports.

All authorized telecom equipment importers, manufacturers, or retailers in the local market, as well as authorized telecom service providers, will have to contact the TRA for details about the new formalities and mechanisms.

All old import licenses will remain valid until their expiration. By then, importers will have to renew them based on the new regulation.
