Lebanon suffers 'flight from quality' as Syria war hits economy

When the Zaitunay Bay waterfront development opened in Beirut two years ago, it epitomised the consumption style that helped drive Lebanon’s late noughties economic boom: cosmopolitan, sleek and exclusive.

Since then the spillover effects of the civil war in neighbouring Syria have left this high-rent tourist destination searching for customers, forcing some of the 17 food and beverage outlets there to close.
