The state controlled tobacco monopoly, Régie, signed an agreement with the Italian firm Comas who won a tender to install a new production line at the cigarette factory in Hadath. The cost of the production line and equipment reaches $8 million. Comas will also be in charge of training staff.

The new line will be used for preparation and treatment of tobacco before it is manufactured and packed. It will have a total production capacity of 2,500 kg/hour, which allows the creation of new flavored cigarettes.

It will also raise production to 50,000 boxes of cigarettes per month compared to 22,000 boxes currently.

As part of its strategic plan, Régie will complete the installation of a new cigarette rolling line for Cedars 100 mm, in order to improve the quality of the product and adapt to the standards of World Health Organization.

The Régie intends to install another production line to produce 84 mm cigarettes in 2014. It is currently in negotiations with an international tobacco firm to produce one of its brands locally.
