Local mobile operator Alfa inaugurated a new broadcast station, on January 11, to work on solar energy.

The station is located in Laqlouq and is expected to amplify and improve the network coverage in the remote mountain areas of Jbeil and Batroun.

The project is a joint venture between the Ministry of Telecommunications and the Ministry of Energy, the latter having already begun implementing a national strategy for greener energy.

Marwan Hayek, Chairman and CEO of Alfa said that the company is working on installing ten additional similar stations to cover higher areas. The Laqlouq station has a power output of 2,000 kilowatts.

“Solar panel stations are a very good alternative towards green energy in mountain areas.” He said that installing solar panels requires a lot of space, that’s why it is less adequate in cities, or on top of buildings.

Alfa has recently installed four new stations in the Laqlouq region to boost coverage, and is working on several more in other areas.
