The southern suburbs of Beirut were never so silent and precarious as they are today, except during the 1980s and the years before, when citrus orchards and gardens surrounded its houses and stretched over vast surfaces between the small neighborhoods. The suburbs are the capital’s twin city that has accommodated the poor coming from all villages, from the far north to the far south, the Bekaa Valley and Mount Lebanon. Never complaining or closing the door to anyone, the region has been very patient and suffered a lot. It has witnessed shell bombings coming from all sides, and repeatedly experienced the aggressions of Israelis, who in 2006 thought they would be able to wipe it off the country’s map. It has also witnessed how a person has killed his brother. However, it came back. It has always been able to come back and emerge once more as the legend of the Phoenix.
