The Parliament enacted on April 2nd a law pertaining to contract workers at Electricité du Liban (EDL) and the three Distribution Service Providers (DSP). Contract workers under the age of 56, will be have the possibility to become full-time employees after undertaking the required examinations.

“A competitive examination will be held to fill up the vacancies at EDL and all related administrations through the Civil Service Council, under the supervision of the EDL,” said Bilal Bajouk, Secretary of the Service Providers Workers Committee. The exam will be limited to hourly-wage workers under the age of 56.

End-of-service compensation is also covered by the new law. For each three years of previous service, workers who pass the exam will be considered as if they have worked one year as full timers.

Those who will not be accepted as employees in the EDL after failing the exam will receive a two-month compensation pay for each year of previous service. Workers who are subscribed to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) or benefiting from other governmental insurance funds are excluded from these compensation provisions.

Workers over the age of 56, who have not the right to take the exam, are also entitled to two months’ compensation for each year of previous service.
