The European Union (EU)  has offered an $11 million grant to finance a reform plan for the education sector.

The project requires three years for execution. The national coordinator of the project is the Council of Development and Reconstruction (CDR). It is designed to enhance the quality of education in public schools and technical institutions.

Previously,  the EU has supported the Ministry of Education and Higher Education through boosting the technical training, enhancing enrollment in schools, and reducing the number of dropouts, as well as adopting education that develops citizenship.

The current EU project aims at continuing the efforts taken before to develop the sector through reforming schools, orienting students towards technical education.

The project will be executed in coordination with the Center of Education and Research Development (CERD). Experts note that  the public educational system, which comprises about 1,360 schools, plays an important role in boosting social cohesion, but needs increased emphasis on this issue.

The Government already set a national strategy for education and a plan to develop the sector for 2010-2015. The strategy’s programs include compulsory basic education until the age of 15, prevention of dropouts, education that contributes to social integration and adopting technology in education.
