Arthur Nazarian, Minister of Energy and Water (MoEW) has kicked-off 17 water projects costing $4.5 million.

The areas targeted are North, South, and Bekaa. It will be benefiting around 412,000 residents as well as around 200,000 Syrian refugees. “These are all small projects, including drilling wells, laying water pipes, building water storage tanks, and installing generators and pumps,” said Randa Nemr, advisor to Nazarian.

Procurement and construction are earmarked for $4.1 million. The balance will be spent on managing the operation of some 17 NGOs, two of which are Lebanese, who will execute the work. The financial assistance was secured thanks to an emergency fund managed by The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

More than 132 villages in those areas will benefit from water projects to relieve shortages resulting from the huge influx of refugees. Nazarian said the Tripoli region alone has 34 villages without any access to water and has welcome more than 35,000 refugees, accounting for more more than half the residents there. “These projects will all go in parallel pending security,” said Nemr.
