Standards related to the oil sector were issued by Libnor, the public institution affiliated to the Ministry of Industry, on August14.

Lena Dergham, General Director of Libnor said: “The standards for oil derives such as natural gas and fuel oil are set to guarantee safety.”

The standards should be adopted on all imported products. “The oil products that will be produced locally should also comply with these standards,” she said.

Libnor set the standards based on international regulations to protect the health of the consumers and ensure fair practices. Within the absence of international standards Libnor relies on the European standards, or regional standards. Libnor also studies special norms for the local market when there are varieties.   

Dergham said: “The oil and gas norms concerns the quality of the products imported or manufactured and the laboratories authorized examining these products.” The standards determine the sulfur and mercury compounds in natural gas. It also determines the hydrogen, helium, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and hydrocarbons in natural gas.

The standards will be issued in their final phase as national standard specifications within weeks.
