A $23 million loan agreement was signedbetween the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR) and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), to restore the road between Riyak and Al Kark in Bekaa by widening it and installing its infrastructure.

Melhem Ghassan, Mayor of Ferzol in Bekaa, said: “This project will benefit not only the five municipalities it will pass through, but all of Central and North Bekaa.” Among the municipalities the road passes through are Ferzol, Zahle el Maalaka, and Ablah.

The seven-kilometer road was first developed 50 years ago and was never restored. “This is a very vital road that we have asked to have restored especially because it is international,” he said. The road goes through Hermel and Baalbeck to reach Aleppo, Syria.

Necessary expropriations were completed by the CDR.
