A public market in Karantina was reopened last Saturday by the Public Institution of Public Markets.

Located near the Port of Beirut, the market was first opened in 1996 and closed four years later. Yasser Zebian General Manager of the market said: “The re-opening of this market will bring benefits, as it is an implementation of the public service. We aim to take this concept to different regions.”

The market has a 3,500 square meter space, out of which 1,200 m2 are dedicated to the fish market. The remaining outlets will be open to different types of consumer products, including clothing and accessories. The market can host up to 100 shops, each with a space of around 18 m2 and a leasing fee of $190, per shop, per month, including water, electricity, and security guards. To be eligible, tenants must be Lebanese.

The role of the Public Institution of Public Markets is limited to quality supervision, not to pricing, which is set by each seller.
