Local firm Irsal Telecom completed the installation of 500 solar street lights at the end of December through a grant by the Chinese Government.

“The solar street lights were installed in Dora, Jounieh, Cornet Chehwan, and Batroun,” said Sarkis Farah, Senior Implementation Engineer at the Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC), which supervised the project’s implementation.

More than 60 of the 500 streetlights were installed on the Dora highway, the Northern entrance of Beirut. The highway receives more than 60 percent of the traffic in and out of Beirut.

These lights are powered by photovoltaic panels that convert solar light to LED lamps.

Irsal Telecom won a tender supervised by Chinese firm Huawei to install the $3.6 million streetlights.

This is the second grant by the Chinese Government for renewable energy, following a grant of 500 solar water heaters in 2006.
