The construction of a solid waste sorting facility has been completed in Nabatieh to serve 29 municipalities.

The facility is awaiting the results of a tender to be held by the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR) for assigning an operator. The winning firm will run the plant for three years, with a renewable option.

Abdul Reda Sheaib, Chief Financial Officer at the Union of Shkeef Municipalities, said: “The Union purchased the land and the plant was developed and equipped with the help of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Office of the Minister of State for Administrative Reform (OMSAR).”

The land was purchased and prepared for development for $660,000. The investment in the project is $11 million, including an EIB grant of $8.5 million for the facility’s operations and $900,000 for construction works.

The facility is being constructed on a 14,000 square meters plot. It will have the capacity to sort 200 tons of solid waste, daily.
