La Douceur, a manufacturer of Arabic and Italian ice-cream, opened a factory in Zahle last July.

The $4 million project has a total built-up area of 2,500 square meters. It is equipped with fully automated machines imported from Italy and Greece.

The factory created around 20 full time jobs. Its production capacity reaches 225 tons of ice-cream per season. Total local ice-cream production is estimated at 1,500 tons per season, according to Gilbert Maalouf, General Manager. He said that the factory is not operating at full capacity yet and the amounts produced will be increased gradually.

The factory is distributing its production to pastry shops, restaurants, and coffee shops. Maalouf said that they are also packaging their products in one-liter containers, under the La Douceur brand name for distribution in supermarkets.

Maalouf said that the company expects to export part of its production in the near future. “Our factory is ISO and HACP certified, so our products are able to penetrate all countries.”
