The European Union is funding a wastewater project with the goal of upgrading the quality of life in Hermel.

The project is composed of a wastewater treatment plant that will see construction kickoff within the next week. Maalouf Contracting will handle construction of the plant, which is expected to take one year. “The company will also supervise the plant’s operations for another year,” said Hisham Iskandar, member of the Hermel municipality. The plant will be located in the area of Rajm, six kilometers from the city.

The project also entails the construction of a seven-kilometer sewage pipe. Iskandar said: “The project serves 22,000 inhabitants in Hermel, who constitute more than half of the population there.”

The value of works is $3.2 million, borne completely by the EU. The Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD) and the Kuwaiti Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) will fund the construction of wastewater networks throughout the city, once the plant and main pipe are completed. The networks’ construction will be overseen by the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR) at a value of $2 million.
