The TRA board stressed that the Minister is the one who determines the policy of the sector, a joint statement released by the Ministry and TRA said.

Both parts have agreed to define clearly the concept of liberalizing the telecom sector, and remove any administrative or tax restrictions that might delay transforming the telecommunication sector to a key sector that enhances the economic activity.

The two sides also agreed to consider the privatization alternative as a mean to enhance and encourage competition, and at the same time define means on how to benefit from the infrastructure currently available and that can be provided by the Ministry including the fiber optic network.

Minister Nahas praised the professionalism of the TRA’s board and its staff.

He said that discussions must start on how to transfer certain functions to the Authority so the body executes it advisory and regulatory role toward the Ministry and subscribers.

The two sides also agreed to rationalize the usage of grants provided to the TRA from the United States, European Union, and the World Bank to serve the goals mentioned above.
