Renovation of the 30-year old bridge also comes as a part of the plan to renovate and develop the road infrastructure network around the Beirut city.

The abolished Barbir bridge will be substituted with a tunnel that will connect the Western part of Beirut to the Eastern part. The tunnel will stem from the Talmees street to the Fouad 1st bridge -Bshara Al-Khoury Avenue.

The CDR will also install a lighting system around the 236-meters tall, tunnel which has a width of 15 meters.

The project is expected to be completed in two and a half years, the CDR said.
