Beirut was 43rd most expensive city in 2009; but it would be implausible to compare this ranking to Beirut’s position this year, Mercer has explained, keeping in mind that the 2010 study covers 41 new cities included for the first time.  “The global rank of most Arab cities covered has dropped due to the addition of new cities to the rankings,” Mercer has said.

More than 200 items are used to determine city-rankings. Notwithstanding factors like the costs of clothing, food, and entertainment services, in addition to costs of household equipments, prices of housing are the most contributing element to rankings, Mercer said.

New York is the base city for the index and currency fluctuations are measured against the dollar ($).

Beirut was fourth most expensive city among Arab and Gulf cities, coming after Abu Dhabi (most expensive city in Arab World, and 50th globally), Dubai (2nd Arab most expensive city- 55th worldwide), and Djibouti (3rd among Arab cities- and 62nd worldwide).

However, Beirut was more expensive than Amman (5th), and Cairo (6th place), and even more costly than Doha (12th place among Arab cities), the study revealed.

Globally, Beirut was less costly than Toronto in Canada, Taipei in Taiwan but more expensive than Germany’s- Stuttgart, and Latvian City- Riga.

According to Mercer, Luanda in Angola is the world's most expensive city for expatriates, followed by Tokyo is in second position, Ndjamena in Chad in third place, and Moscow is in fourth position.
Karachi is the world's least expensive city, the study showed.
