June 24, 2011- Syria’s Central Bank opened an account at the Central Bank of Lebanon ten days ago, a local newspaper quoted a source as saying on Thursday (June 23).

Al-Liwaa daily quoted a well-informed source as saying that such measure “is quite familiar in relations between central banks around the world.” However, he said, it poses question marks on its timing correlating with the emergent crisis in Syria and the international community’s proclivity to impose sanctions on the regime there.

According to the source, international concerned parties have warned Lebanese officials against the probability of the Syrian regime using branches of Lebanese banks in Syria to confront international sanctions.
