Waste Management endeavor
New $750,000-facility for processing medical waste in Saida and the South

July 27, 2011- Local non-governmental organization ‘arcenciel’ inaugurated a new center for medical waste management in Saida. The center is designed to treat hazardous hospital waste in the southern part of the country.

The NGO said that the center can process medical waste produced by 70 percent of hospital beds in the South. It added that the $750,000 project is funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
The Saida center is arcenciel's fifth medical waste management facility, along with two centers in Beirut and one in each of Zgharta and Zahlé.

The Ministry of Environment said the amount spent yearly to address health problems caused by pollution reached around $230 million.
