Emirati firm Gulftainer will sign on Tuesday (October 8) a contract to build, operate, and transfer (BOT) civil works at the new Port of Tripoli container terminal.

The Sharjah-based firm will be tasked with the finance, design, procurement, construction, operation, and maintenance of the quay for the next 25 years. The quay was built by the China Harbor Engineering Company and the consultant was Dar al-Handasah (Shair and Partners).

Gulftainer said it will invest around $65 million in equipping the container terminal. “Gulftainer will also provide a $10 million loan to launch the first phase of infrastructure works,” said Ahmad Tamer, General Director of the Port.

Local contractors Mouawad-Edde will handle Phase I of infrastructure works. This phase is expected to take about a year. “The works will be carried out over 50,000 square meters near the quay. They will allow the terminal to process up to 400,000 containers per year. The second phase will double this capacity,” said Tamer.

The upgraded infrastructure will include new administrative premises, warehouses, a fire station, control rooms, and water and power networks. The project also includes the construction of flexible asphalt pavements.
