The Cabinet approved last week to the establishing of the General Institute for Olives and Olive Oil, which will be under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Anwar Daou, Advisor to the Ministry, said: “The institution aims to support olive farmers in the production and marketing phases.”

According to Daou, Olives are planted on 700 hectares and thousands of farmers rely on this agricultural sector. Therefore, having such an institute makes perfect sense.

The institution will support olive farmers through training sessions on how to produce virgin oil to high standards, reducing costs, and marketing produce here and abroad.

Daou said that the institution will be similar to the Directorate of Grain and Sugar Beets which is under the Ministry of Economy.

The institution will include representatives from both the private and public sectors.
