The agreement will enter into force on May 15. Under the terms of the agreement, MEA and Turkish Airlines will place their codes on their respective flights between Beirut and Istanbul.

Turkish Airlines will operate three daily flights on the sector Istanbul-Beirut-Istanbul, while MEA will be operating two daily flights.

Turkish Airlines, a member of Star Alliance, has a fleet of 337 aircraft flying to 299 destinations. MEA, a member of the SkyTeam alliance, has a fleet of 18 Airbus Aircraft.

MEA has also codeshare agreements with other airlines, including Royal Jordanian and Air France.

The Civil Aviation Authority also reached an agreement with its Cypriot counterpart to raise weekly flights between both countries to 18.

Cobalt, Cyprus’s low-cost airline, has also opened a route from Larnaca to Beirut, starting this month. The new route is scheduled to operate seven times a week. At the time of publishing, a round trip ticket was priced at $72.

Two flights are scheduled on Thursdays and Sundays, and a single flight every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. In addition, there will be another two flights, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, every Thursday and Sunday.

Mohamed El Hout, Chairman of MEA, said: “We are studying opening a direct route to Madrid.”

MEA is expecting to receive five of the ten new Airbus aircrafts in 2019, and the balance in 2021.
