The American University of Beirut Medical Center recently laid the foundation stone for the New Medical Center Expansion (NMCE) this week. Construction is expected to start in fall 2020 to be completed by fall 2025.

The NMCE building will include 12 floors above ground, and ten underground levels. It will be constructed in place of the current parking lot, extending from Maamari Street towards Clemenceau Street, and connecting to the existing Medical Center buildings.

The NMCE will include an additional 135 beds, as well as a pediatric pavilion and a cancer treatment center, with operation rooms, intensive care units, an emergency department, and parking spaces. The Center will accommodate growing inpatient clinical programs, provide additional inpatient beds, and create improved vehicular access and parking for patients and visitors

The new building will also serve as a connector to the educational and research activities of the medical school on AUB's campus, and to a future hospital expansion further to the west.

Dar Group and Perkins + Will have completed the concept and schematic design phases.

The NMCE is part of AUBMC’s 2020 vision, which was launched in 2010 to expand the hospital, deliver patient-centered care, and innovative research. Several centers have been completed, such as the Halim and Aida Daniel Academic and Clinical Center (Daniel ACC), and the Wassef and Souad Sawwaf Building.

Investments allocated to the whole expansion plan will reach $500 million, financed by donors and bank loans.
