The Lebanese American University (LAU) said it has appointed Chaouki Abdallah to succeed Michel Mawad as its tenth President whose term expires at the end of September 2024.
Abdallah said that with support from its Board of Trustees, LAU has plenty of opportunities to contribute more to educating future generations by leveraging the potential of its students, faculty, staff, and alumni. and that it will cooperate with other higher education institutions to continue serving society.
Until he takes office of his new position, Abdallah is currently Executive Vice President for Research at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) with a research budget of more than $1.4 billion. His previous administrative experience includes serving as President and Provost of the University of New Mexico.
Philip Stoltzfus, Chairman of LAU’s Board of Trustees said: “Building on the legacy of President Mawad, who led the University through challenging times, the mission now requires LAU to become a global institution, with a New York campus, MENA regional initiatives, online education, and bold investment in research.”
Abdallah holds PhD and Master of Science degrees from Georgia Tech. He has published more than 360 peer-reviewed academic research papers. He also holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Youngstown State University.
